the summer, carol, he talked about that foreign policy trip overseas. mitt romney was strongly criticized by some in the palestinian community after he basically said that the reason why the palestinian territory there is not doing very well is because of cultural differences with israel. there is one excerpt from the speech we want to show to you. this is basically where mitt romney is going to be going with this speech later on this morning. he is going to say, quote, we cannot support our friends and defeat our enemies in t middle east when our words are not backed by deeds, when our defense spending is being arbitrarily and deeply cut, when we have no trade agenda to speak of and the perception of our strategy is not one of partnership, but of passivity. it is time to change course in the middle east. one final thing, carol, on a campaign conference call yesterday romney's foreign policy team talked about some presidents of past they might be shaping their foreign policy principles after. they talked about the presidencies of jfk, truman and even bill clinton. after that first debate

with that. can you discern what romney was talking about when he said biden contradicted that sworn testimony? >> well, i would say number one that is probably a reference to eric nordstrom, who was the regional security officer, that means he works for the state department. the diplomatic security side of that. and he -- in sworn testimony he did say that he had asked for more security assistance, more personnel, and that he was refuse refused. you have to get into the subchapters on this. there were requests he made that were verbal. there were requests that were not necessarily formal bureaucratic stamped type of things. so i think we have to really get down into the weeds to say was it a formal request that was turned down, was it a less formal, verbal one et cetera. on the other side, that we that you were talking about, what he's saying is, look, this is handled, the personnel issues are handled by the state department. that type of detail doesn't come to us here at the white house. at least that's what the white house is saying. >> two things going on there. let me throw anot

. we talk middle east, we talk syria specifically and that's one of the topics that mitt romney touched on today when he was speaking at the virginia military institute. take a listen. >> in syria, i work with our partners to identify and organize those members of the opposition who share our values. and then ensure that they obtain the arms they need to defeat assad's tanks and helicopters and fighter jets. iran is sending arms to assad because they know his downfall would be a strategic defeat for him. we should be working no less vigorously through our international partners to support the many syrians who would deliver that defeat to iran, whether sitting on the sidelines. it is essential that we develop influence with those forces in syria that will one day lead a country that sits at the heart of the middle east. >> mitt romney is saying, arm the rebels. again, the question being how well do we know them, how do we know which rebels we should be arming, that's the question for you. >> the wording there is interesting. he's not saying i believe the united states should arm the rebe

't bring his a-game. so it is a little bit surprising that this poll shows obama slightly ahead of romney. >> yeah, at least it makes the contest more interesting and not predictable. so let's talk about tuesday's debate format. our candy crowley, she is going to be great, make that raddatz, we knew was going to be great. how is this going to be different? >> well, it is a town hall format, different than just the usual area, the candidates are speaking directly to the voters themselves. they're having to gauge or maybe you know, modify their answers based on the reaction, right? it is a lot tougher, it presents a lot more opportunities for mistakes. you remember, don, in 1992, president george h.w. bush looking down at his watch in a town hall format debate. it presents a little bit more opportunities to mess up. because the audience right there, you have to react to, as well as the audience at home. so it is a little bit harder to connect. >> yeah, but guess what? who do you remember? the people who are relatable, and not perfect. >> that is true, that is true. >> thank you shannon. >>
